Tartarus

To all of you who are just trying to make it in the big, bad world, you’re not alone. There were many before you, and there will be many more to come, who will tread on the same path that you are taking right now. As the new year dawns, so dawns a new story. Your story. And you have the power to make of it what you want. Have hope, for your moon awaits you, and there is a place for you among the stars.

In the gloomy quiet of winter’s night,

he stands bathed in tendrils of the moon’s love.

On a ledge but barely larger than his own two feet,

he perches precariously over a pit of horrors.

From the depths of the pit, icy flames lick at the walls,

seeking to keep him forever from his faithful moon,

while daemons call out to him in their guttural voices,

a chant that few have heard and lived to tell of.

High above him, the stars shine bright,

supportive and paternal their steady twinkling

a soft wind whispers in trees just out of view

telling tales of faith and courage and valor.

With echoes of hope reverberating through his heart,

He begins to climb out of his timeless hell,

Even as the flames come curling up to his feet,

And the screaming daemons pull him back down

This deadly, ceaseless dance of climb and fall,

Repeats until finally, he can climb no more

Drained, he gives up, falling back into the un-quenching flames

and the tireless daemons roar as they claim another

Still the moon watches, faithful and waiting

A single tearful silver breaking her pure white

As the birds sing his eulogy for the next one to come

And the wind in the trees whispers his tale of valor.

At the end of the day, it is not the failures, but the fight that is remembered for generations to come. Leave a mark in history with every battle, and focus not on the failures, for there will always be another chance for you to beat your daemons. Look ahead, to the skies that are waiting, and not to the pits behind you, because the road ahead is all that matters, and you have the power to change it.
